Ellis has been licensed by the Maine Department of Agriculture since 1981 and running forestry work since 1989. Same family, same place on Old Town Road, two trades that most people never see under one name.

How Ellis got here

Four greenhouses, 8,500 square feet

Ellis Greenhouse and Nursery is first licensed by the Maine Department of Agriculture in 1981. Today, four greenhouses totaling 8,500 square feet grow garden plants for local customers through the spring.

Forestry work begins

Ellis Forestry Service starts up alongside the greenhouse, with Kirby Ellis working as a Licensed Forester for landowners around the Hudson area.

The greenhouse expands

The growing operation expands beyond its original footprint, with wholesale delivery reaching out to about a hundred miles.

Hundreds of varieties, two trades

Retail customers pull into the yard on Old Town Road through the spring, wholesale orders go out across the state, and the forestry side keeps working the woodlots year round.

Two sides of the same business

We work with plants at bench scale and at woodlot scale.

Since 1981

Greenhouse & Nursery

Annuals, perennials, vegetables, herbs, planters, hanging baskets and seeds, grown here and sold at the door from mid-April through mid-June. Wholesale plants go out to garden centres and stores across a wide stretch of Maine.

Since 1989

Forest Management

Forest management plans, forest inventories, digital mapping and harvest supervision for Maine landowners, led by Licensed Forester Kirby Ellis. This side of the business does not close for the season. Ellis Forestry Service was recognized with the Austin Cary Practicing Professional Award in 2017.
